The outpatient comparator dashboard allows you to compare outpatient performance within respiratory medicine on a range of different indicators and across a customisable set of organisations.
Please reference use of the Taskforce data dashboards, and if you have any comments or questions please contact taskforce@asthmaandlung.org.uk.
How to use this dashboard
- The Outpatient Comparator dashboard allows you to compare outpatient activity for your selected organisations and specialty (Respiratory Medicine or Paediatric Respiratory Medicine), and how they compare with the average.
- We recommend you select no more than 4 organisations to compare at a time.
- The activity table shows Value Type (e.g. Appointments) selected by Appointment Type across the Organisations selected, can show by absolute numbers or rate per 100,000 as per Normalisation filter.
- When comparing areas, we recommend using the Normalisation filter Rate per 100,000 (default).
- The colour gradient reflects magnitude of the Value Type selected across the Organisations selected, with lower values represented by lighter shades, and higher values represented by darker shades.
- The 3-year trend chart shows Organisations selected using the same colours as the activity table.
- The activity bar chart shows Value Type for Date Period and Organisations selected compared to the national average
- The activity change chart shows difference in Value Type selected compared to previous year for Organisations selected.
- Appointment Type filter adjusts the metric shown in all visualisations except the Activity Table.
- Use the Normalisation setting ofAbsolute for raw numbers and Rate per 100,000 to compare areas.
- We recommend using the Table View to compare all areas by Organisation Type, Date Period, Consultant Speciality, Appointment Type and Normalisation.
- Note that in the Table View the cost per patient (£) and average RTT wait parameters only visible when Normalisation filter Absolute selected.

About the data source
Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Outpatient Activity is an NHS data set comprising details of all outpatient appointments at NHS hospitals in England and includes data about hospital outpatient appointments by patient demographics, attendance types, operations, specialty, and provider level analysis. HES is sourced from the Secondary Uses Service (SUS) database, which is collected from hospitals’ patient administration systems on a monthly basis at record level. The quality of HES data is the responsibility of the NHS providers who submit the data to Secondary Uses Service (SUS). These data are required to be accurate to enable them to be correctly paid for the activity they undertake.
